As we reviewed the budget, we saw we were about maxed out and wouldn't all be able to do everything we had still hoped here in New Braunfels. Since I had taken the bigger girls to Six Flags, we decided Benjo and I would make it a man-date and go to the Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo just the two of us.
We had a great time!
They were featured on the Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs show on the Discovery channel, though an employee admitted that was a bit over-dramatized. Here's a 2-minute clip:
I admit I didn't expect more than some snakes and maybe a few other animals. They have quite a collection, however, and are officially recognized as a full zoo.
The Animal World and Snake Farm zoo opened in the 1960s. About 10 years ago, new management brought some new vision and they've been slowly growing as they can. Recently they purchased some 20 acres adjacent to their current location to expand into. They hope to build larger living environments for their animals as well as increasing the number and types they have.
It wasn't very crowded and what a treat!
Petting an Albino Burmese Python
We liked the Jaguar. There was a black panther in here too that we didn't see at first.
What the? The worlds largest rodent. That would require a BIG mouse trap!
Laughing Hyenas
When I was a young wart hoooooooog!!!
Petting a small crocodile
How cool is this!
Peacocks and chickens wandered freely
River otters behind this handsome little man!
And when we were done, what was his favorite part? This big bear that opened and closed its arms every few seconds.
After this awesome zoo, we tried a local frozen custard chain called Freddy's. Yummo!
