History and Baseball

Today I got to do something I've wanted to do for years! I got to see Bonnie's old stomping grounds from when she was a girl in Houston!

"Midges", as they used to call it. She'd go here to get candy. We were glad it was still in operation. Turns out, it's been in business there for over 60 years! Go Midget Market!

Bonnie's home.

We drove by her old house and a man was sitting out front reading. To Bonnie's dismay, we were um, not totally un-awkward as we drove by kind of maybe staring. 😂

We parked a coupe houses down (closest available spot) and Pai (Bonnie's Dad) and I walked back and greeted the man. Turns out, it's the same couple still that bought the home from Bonnie's parents! And they don't intend to sell--they love it there! How cool is that!

We also visited her elementary and middle schools along with a pool the family would often go swimming at. Bonnie told us some things she could remember while we were at each place. It was really, really fun for me! Maybe my favorite part of Worldschooling thus far!

Next we went to Minute Maid Park for a stadium tour!

Family on the Field!

I think she felt at home here rather quickly. #baseballgirl

Benjo was cracking. us. up! He kept posing for pictures all over the place!

Notice the weird outfield grass? Top Golf had been there the day before -- people hitting golf balls from removed rows of seats onto the field. Seems pretty fun! We found a couple missed golf balls amongst some seats along our tour.

Perhaps the most amusing pic of the tour; this one was in the men's restroom. Perhaps that last one in red could have said "you might have gone in the wrong door!" LoL!

After the field we made a stop for a Mexican dinner, especially for some sopapillas. The place Bonnie loved eating them at as a child no longer existed, but we had some anyway as she's told me about them multiple times.

Sopapillas. Basically... scones.

For the record, she was not the one pushing this childhood-revisiting-excursion at all. She enjoyed it, but she doesn't get a whole lot out of nostalgia. I love nostalgia, however, and got lots of it from this little outing!

And yes, I may be just a bit crazy about my amazing wifey. 🙌

Seems like this day would be done by now, but wait, there's more!

We made it to the San Jacinto monument before nightfall, and only about 45 minutes before closing. We didn't realize just how much cool stuff it would have! We didn't get to see all or spend nearly the time we wanted there. We didn't even make it to the battleship at all! But still, glad we got to go.

The monument is no small structure, well taller than the Statue of Liberty

Hey look! A picture of me made it on here!

Quick overview--you've heard of The Alamo in what is now San Antonio. There, the army was defeated and completely slaughtered. It was general Santa Anna, a Mexican tyrant who overthrew his own republic to become a dictator, who personally led this charge. It was at San Jacinto that Sam Houston led an army to victory against Santa Anna and captured him, then sparing his life in trade for Texas independence. In leading the charge, it was to inspire his men that he yelled "Remember the Alamo!"

It's a touching piece of history. And so, on that note, I'm going to completely about face and share with you a rather whimsically humorous bit: what I found in the San Jacinto gift shop!

Okay, this book is HILARIOUS! ..are you ready?

First, check out some of these reviews. I mean, this obviously is a high ranking piece of literature!

...are you ready?

LoL! #texanpride

I don't know of any state that has pride like Texans have it. As a Texan friend of mine has said: "Never ask a man where he's from. If he's from Texas, he'll have told you already. If he isn't, don't embarrass the poor fellow!"

Once they kicked us out for closing time, we headed back home (to Salli's, Bonnie's sister's) and back to fun and games!

I'm pretty sure if you do an photo appearance count on this Blog, Rebekah will beat everyone else combined.
